NFA-2Joseph Mariano
The National Flute Association
Historic Recording Series, Vol. 2
In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 17, 1922, a young Italian couple by the name of Mariano welcomed the first of their four children, and named him Joseph. Joseph's father worked for the railroad; his mother keep house and raised the children - and sang. She sang magnificently, in a beautiful, slightly husky mezzo-soprano voice. She sang from dawn to dusk - lullabies, folk and popular songs, even grand opera. In fact the whole Mariano clan adored opera; perhaps this is why as a payment for a job, Joseph's father was once given a flute.
The instrument intrigued young Joseph, who started lessons at age twelve, and was soon satisfying his cousins' demands for famous opera arias....
